Daniel Mattingly is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Yale University, specializing in the domestic and international politics of authoritarian regimes, particularly China. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. from Yale University. His research focuses on political control mechanisms, military politics, and China's global influence strategies.
Mattingly is the author of The Art of Political Control in China (Cambridge University Press, 2020), which received multiple accolades, including the APSA Democracy and Autocracy Section Best Book Award and recognition as one of Foreign Affairs' Best Books of 2020. His current book project examines the role of the military in China's domestic and international politics.
His articles have appeared in leading journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, and World Politics. Notable works include analyses of China's propaganda strategies, military-party relations, and nationalist diplomacy.
Mattingly has been awarded prestigious honors, including the Luebbert Best Article Award (2023) and the Gaddis Smith International Book Prize. His work bridges comparative politics and international relations, with a focus on authoritarian regimes' resilience and global influence.
