Yumin Sheng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Wayne State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on civil-military relations, clientelism, globalization's impact on domestic politics, federalism, and resource redistribution under authoritarian regimes, with a regional emphasis on contemporary China.
He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University (2005) and an M.A. from Temple University (1999). His work bridges comparative politics and Chinese political economy, analyzing how authoritarian systems manage territorial governance and political elites.
Key publications include Economic Openness and Territorial Politics in China (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and influential articles on Chinese provincial politics, authoritarian co-optation mechanisms, and the interplay between economic performance and political stability. His research often employs quantitative methods to interrogate power dynamics in non-democratic regimes.
