Jessica Chen Weiss is the David M. Lampton Professor of China Studies at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies and a nonresident senior fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute Center for China Analysis. She previously served as an assistant professor at Yale University and was a senior advisor to the U.S. State Department's Policy Planning Staff from 2021 to 2022 through a Council on Foreign Relations Fellowship.
Her research focuses on Chinese nationalism, foreign policy, and international relations. She is the author of Powerful Patriots: Nationalist Protest in China's Foreign Relations (Oxford University Press, 2014), and her scholarly work has been published in leading journals such as International Organization, Security Studies, China Quarterly, and Journal of Conflict Resolution. Her commentary has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, and the Ezra Klein Show.
She was profiled by the New Yorker and named one of Prospect Magazine's Top Thinkers for 2024. Her policy engagement includes her fellowship with the Council on Foreign Relations, during which she advised the State Department.
