Margaret Lewis is a prominent academic specializing in Chinese and Taiwanese law, criminal justice, and U.S.-China relations. She currently serves as a Visiting Academic Researcher at the University of Melbourne's Asian Law Centre (Melbourne Law School). Her career includes roles such as Fulbright Senior Scholar at National Taiwan University, Visiting Professor at Academia Sinica, and consultant to the Ford Foundation. She is affiliated with NYU School of Law’s U.S.-Asia Law Institute as a nonresident scholar.
Education: B.A. in East Asian Studies (Columbia University, summa cum laude) and J.D. (NYU School of Law, magna cum laude), with additional study at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies.
Research focuses on China’s legal system and human rights, Taiwan’s legal reforms, and transnational legal issues. Notable works include Challenge to China: How Taiwan Abolished its Version of Re-Education Through Labor (co-authored with Jerome A. Cohen) and Criminalizing China. Her articles critically analyze China’s criminal law contributions to economic development, international covenant compliance, and Taiwan’s adversarial legal reforms.
Awards and affiliations include the National Committee on United States-China Relations Public Intellectual Program, Council on Foreign Relations membership, and U.S.-Japan Leadership Program participation.
