Dr Jessica Bates, Senior Lecturer at Ulster University's School of Education, is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She serves as Course Director for the Library and Information Management programme and leads research at the intersection of Education and Library and Information Science.
- Research Interests: Information science, social inclusion, stakeholder engagement, leadership development, oral history, digital literacy, and sustainable educational practices.
Her recent work focuses on sustainable school provision using community-driven methodologies, prison library services reform, and cross-border educational challenges in Ireland. Her research spans topics such as:
- Educational technology and digital inclusion
- Post-conflict library rebuilding (e.g., Mosul University, Iraq)
- Island sustainability (Rathlin Island, AHRC-funded Future Island-Island project)
- Information literacy and policy-practice alignment
- BERA Public Engagement and Impact Award (2022)
- Education Awards, Ireland - Best Use of Educational Technology / ICT Initiative of the Year (2017)
- Education Awards, Ireland - Overall Excellence in Education (2017)
Dr Bates supervises doctoral candidates in Education and Library and Information Science, mentors postgraduate students, and collaborates on international projects. She is an Editorial Board Member of the New Review of Academic Librarianship and contributes to policy reviews for the QAA Subject Benchmark Statement.
