Dr. Jessica Amber Jennings is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Memphis, affiliated with the Herff College of Engineering. Her work focuses on developing biomaterials to combat antimicrobial resistance and prevent infections on medical implants. She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2007 and 2003, respectively) and a B.S. in Biomedical Science (Cum Laude) from the University of Alabama's New College (1999).
Her research interests include biofilm inhibition, injectable drug delivery systems, nanofibrous membranes, and surface modification strategies for regenerative medicine. Notably, she has pioneered antimicrobial coatings and composites for orthopedic implants, leveraging chitosan-based materials. Jennings has secured significant funding from the NIH, DoD, and NSF, and her lab collaborates with industry partners to advance antimicrobial material evaluation and biocompatibility testing.
Jennings has been recognized with awards such as the Outstanding Faculty Research Award (2021), UMRF Ventures Professorship (2020), and University of Memphis PI Millionaire (2019). She is an active member of organizations like the Society for Biomaterials and the Musculoskeletal Infection Society. Her contributions extend to editorial roles, including the Journal of Orthopaedic Research and the American Journal of Undergraduate Research. Jennings has mentored 11 graduate students (many winning NSF fellowships and Society for Biomaterials awards) and over 30 undergraduates, many of whom have pursued advanced studies or industry roles.
