Dr. Farhad Jazaei is an UMRF Ventures Professor and Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Memphis, affiliated with the Herff College of Engineering. His research focuses on microplastic pollution, soil-water dynamics, and groundwater management. He holds a Ph.D. from Auburn University (2017), M.Sc. from Sharif University of Technology (2008), and B.Sc. from K.N. Toosi University of Technology (2006).
Research Interests: Emerging contaminants (microplastics/PFAS), groundwater hydraulics, contaminant transport modeling, numerical simulation, and water resources management. His work bridges environmental engineering challenges with computational tools and field applications. Recent studies include microplastic impacts on soil-water-plant systems and optimizing wellfields to minimize contamination spread.
- Key Projects: NSF CAREER Award ($550K), NSF MRI Grant ($450K), Memphis Aquifer Conservation ($10M)
- Lab: GFCT Lab (Microplastic Research)
Awards: 2024 NSF CAREER Award, Distinguished Research Award (Herff College), Tennessee Governor's Environmental Stewardship Award (group).
Advising: Mentors ~15 graduate students and collaborates on over 20 research projects. Active in curriculum development and STEM outreach, including leading the University of Memphis STEM Pipeline and public forums on water security.
