Yuyu Sun, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell), within the Kennedy College of Sciences. His research focuses on polymer-based biomedical materials, antimicrobial systems, and biofilm control. He holds a Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry and Physics from Fudan University (1998), an M.S. in Textile Chemical Engineering from Donghua University (1995), and a B.S. in Textile Chemical Engineering from Qingdao University (1992).
Dr. Sun’s expertise includes functional polymers for biomedical applications, such as drug delivery systems, antimicrobial biomaterials, and bioadhesives. His work emphasizes developing rechargeable antimicrobial materials and biofilm-controlling additives for applications in dentistry, wound care, and medical devices.
His awards include the Chemistry Department Teaching Award (2014), Wong Research Fund Award (2013), and UMass Lowell President's Research Excellence Award (2010). His grants include projects on rechargeable antimicrobial dental materials and orthopedic implant materials with osteogenic properties.
Key research areas span antimicrobial N-halamine polymers, chitosan-based drug delivery systems, and biofilm-responsive materials. He collaborates on interdisciplinary projects to advance biomedical materials with both antibacterial/antifungal efficacy and biocompatibility.
