Jesse Hamilton McCoy II is a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Duke Law Civil Justice Clinic at Duke University. He joined the Duke Law faculty full-time in 2017, focusing on teaching civil litigation skills and mentoring students representing indigent clients through the clinic's partnership with Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC). His work addresses critical issues such as public housing evictions, landlord-tenant disputes, foreclosure defense, and domestic violence advocacy.
McCoy holds a B.A. from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (2005) and a J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law (2008). Before joining Duke, he practiced law in Raleigh, worked at LANC in Winston-Salem and Durham, and taught at North Carolina Central and Wake Forest University Law Schools.
His research and advocacy emphasize expanding access to justice for marginalized communities. Notable recognition includes the 2025 Duke Law Pro Bono Service Award. McCoy’s clinical practice integrates litigation, policy advocacy, and student training to combat systemic inequities in civil justice systems.
