Jesper Svensson is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Lund University, affiliated with the Department of Political Science and the Environmental Politics Research Group. He is also a researcher in BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate and a member of the LU Profile Area: Nature-based Future Solutions.
His research focuses on the political economy of water markets, biodiversity governance, and market-based environmental policy instruments. His PhD thesis (Oxford University, 2022) examined water rights trading in China through the lens of Elinor Ostrom’s institutional diversity theory. He employs case studies and comparative analysis, drawing from semi-structured interviews, historical archives, and quantitative data.
Key trends in his 15 most recent publications (2016–2025) include water rights trading, hybrid governance, property rights, and biodiversity finance. These works span peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Environmental Research Letters, Water Policy), book chapters (e.g., Oxford Handbook of Water Politics), and policy-focused articles (e.g., Arena Essä).
Grants & Projects: He is currently part of the Mistra Biopath Project (2022–2026), exploring market-based strategies for biodiversity conservation. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to water sustainability, climate action, and responsible consumption.
Labs & Networks: Svensson collaborates with international researchers across China, India, and Sweden, and contributes to the Environmental Politics Research Group at Lund University. His external collaborations include work in Canada, Mongolia, and the USA.
