Dr Jerry Pearson serves as a Senior Lecturer in Policing at the University of Sunderland, where he brings extensive practical experience from his 30-year career in UK policing. He is the Programme Leader for both the two-year (accelerated) and three-year Professional Policing degree courses as well as the Policing Studies degree: BSc (Hons) Professional Policing, BSc (Hons) Professional Policing with Integrated Foundation Year, and BSc (Hons) Policing Studies. Pearson also serves as module leader for the International Criminality module offered as part of the MSc Leadership in Criminal Justice and Policing.
His academic qualifications include a Professional Doctorate and an MBA in Senior Leadership, both earned at the University of Sunderland, as well as a BA (Hons) in Further Education and Training from Northumbria University. He additionally holds Level 7 qualifications in Strategic Leadership and Management and maintains his status as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Pearson's research interests focus on international criminality, foreign national offending, and international policing structures, with particular expertise in Brexit's implications for UK policing. His work examines the challenges of maintaining effective international cooperation in law enforcement following the UK's departure from the European Union, including loss of access to critical systems like the Schengen Information System. He also investigates police contingency planning, safeguarding practices, and the management of serious and organised criminality.
Dr Pearson has received recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy for his contributions to academic teaching and professional development in policing education.

With his extensive background in policing, Pearson supervises students at various levels, from PhD candidates to undergraduate students completing their final year dissertations. His practical experience informs his teaching approach, emphasizing the integration of real-world policing challenges with academic theory. Pearson leads significant academic initiatives in police education, including innovative approaches to developing police officer training that recognizes existing professional experience while fostering new skills and critical thinking.
