Lauren Naisby is an Academic Tutor in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Sunderland, where she joined in 2021. She contributes to teaching modules related to criminology and is pursuing a professional doctorate. Her research focuses on vulnerability within the Appropriate Adult network, supervised by Dr. John Dixon-Dawson and Dr. Kev Smith. She coordinates the Northumbria Local Appropriate Adult Scheme (NLAAS), involving student volunteers assisting vulnerable individuals in police custody.
Educationally, she holds a First Class Honours in Social Sciences: Criminology (2014) and an LLM in Criminal Law and Procedure (2020) from the University of Sunderland. Her research interests span criminological theory, domestic violence, terrorism, counter-terrorism strategies, and legal frameworks like the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (1984).
Awarded an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she emphasizes service user participation in safeguarding vulnerable populations. Before academia, she worked with third-sector organizations supporting marginalized groups within the criminal justice system.
Lauren supervises dissertation students on the BSc (Hons) Criminology program and actively engages in interdisciplinary projects addressing systemic vulnerabilities in legal processes. She advocates for policy reforms, including raising the age of criminal responsibility, informed by biological and sociological research.
