Ben Middleton serves as Academic Dean of the Faculty of Education, Society and Creative Industries at the University of Sunderland, appointed to this position in 2024. Previously, he returned to Sunderland in 2023 as Head of School of Social Sciences. He oversees more than 200 academic staff across diverse disciplines including Education, Social Work, Criminology, Policing, Arts, Media, and Creative Industries.
With 18 years of teaching and research experience, Middleton completed his PhD at Sunderland in 2012 examining how terrorism suspects are treated in the UK and USA. His research concentrates on terrorism, human rights, and public law, with significant contributions to understanding counter-terrorism legislation, control orders, and the balance between national security and civil liberties. His recent work has expanded into human trafficking investigations and financial crime aspects.
Analysis of his publication history reveals a consistent focus on UK counter-terrorism law with increasing attention to practical implementation challenges. His articles demonstrate deep engagement with specific legal cases while maintaining broader theoretical perspectives on human rights protections. The chronological progression shows evolution from foundational legal analysis (2008-2010) toward more nuanced examination of practical enforcement issues (2011-2019).
As an academic leader, Middleton has supervised multiple PhD and DProf students to completion and currently mentors three doctoral candidates. His leadership extends beyond Sunderland, having previously served as Head of Department for Criminology, Law and Policing at Teesside University where he established the Professional Policing degree program in collaboration with the College of Policing.
