Jeremy Reiter is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. His research focuses on cilia biology, including formation, signaling, and roles in intercellular communication and disease. Key achievements include discovering cilia's role in Hedgehog signaling, cancer growth, and ciliopathy genetics.
Education:
- BA in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics, Yale College (1993)
- PhD in Genetics, UCSF (1999)
- MD in Medicine, UCSF (2001)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Developmental Biology, UC Berkeley (2003)
- Fellow in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, UCSF (2006)
His research spans ciliary membrane lipid composition, transition zone architecture, and cilia's role in appetite regulation and adipogenesis. Studies often intersect with cancer biology, neurodevelopment, and kidney disease.
Scientific Awards:
- Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (2001)
- March of Dimes Basil O’Connor Research Award (2004)
- Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award (2005)
- Packard Fellow for Science and Engineering (2007)
- PECASE (2009)
- ASCI member (2010)
- National Academy of Science Kavli Fellow (2011)
- American Association of Anatomists R. R. Bensley Award (2015)
- Grace Boyer and Albert Bowers Endowed Chairs (2017)
Grants include NIH funding for studies on obesity in ciliopathies, Hedgehog signaling, transition zone control, and Zika virus impacts.
Labs and teams focus on ciliogenesis, cellular signal transduction, and human disease genetics.
