Jer Nelsen serves as Associate Dean of the South Carolina School of the Arts and Associate Professor of Art at Anderson University, where he has taught since 2021. His dynamic photography courses blend traditional darkroom techniques with modern studio practices and business planning in intimate class settings that foster creative community development.
His educational background includes:
- BS in Photography from Indiana Wesleyan University
- MFA in Visual Art (Photography) from Lesley University
Nelsen's research spans traditional and cutting-edge photography with mastery in palladium/platinum printing and alternative processes. His recent work investigates intersections of art, faith, and scientific theories including string theory and quantum mechanics, while actively engaging with gaussian splatting, radiance field visualization, and AI-driven 3D modeling integrated with 3D printing. His creative output manifests in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the United States.
He secured the 2024 AU Faculty Summer Research Grant for "AI and Progressive Generative Forms" and the 2021 "Ghost Spaces" photographic exhibition project, along with the 2018-19 Eli Lily Grant for "Imaginarium – Junior Printing Co." His conference presentations focus on innovative pedagogy including generative AI integration for student engagement and team-teaching strategies.
Nelsen emphasizes helping students grow in both Christian faith and technical skills, transitioning from instructor to cheerleader as they develop creative voices. Anderson University's environment uniquely supports his integration of art, faith, and teaching where "being and doing blend seamlessly" for developing future creative leaders.
