Christina Anderson is a Professor in the School of Film & Photography within the College of Arts & Architecture at Montana State University. With a distinguished career spanning over two decades, she has established herself as a leading expert in alternative photographic processes and experimental black and white photography.
Her educational background includes a B.A. in French from the University of Minnesota (1979), and dual degrees from Montana State University—a B.A. in Photography and a B.F.A. in Painting/Studio Art (2000)—followed by an M.F.A. in Photography from Clemson University (2005).
Anderson's research focuses on the intersection of historical photographic techniques and contemporary practice. She specializes in alternative processes including lumen printing, mordançage, chromoskedasic sabattier, chemigrams, cyanotype, palladium, gum bichromate, casein bichromate, chrysotype, and salted paper printing. Her work bridges the gap between analog and digital workflows through innovative digital negative production methods.
Her publication record demonstrates significant scholarly contribution to the field, with multiple authoritative books published through Routledge that have become standard references for photographers and educators. These works document both technical processes and showcase contemporary artistic applications.
