He holds a PhD from the University of Bayreuth (2002) and a BSc from the University of St. Andrews (1997). His research focuses on biogeochemical cycles in response to environmental changes, plant-soil interactions, pyrogenic carbon, and methane fluxes in peatlands. He leads major NERC-funded projects such as Stabilisation of Pyrogenic Carbon in Tropical Grasslands (2020–2023) and PRIMETIME (2017–2021).
- Editorial roles: Associate Editor of Biogeosciences, Consulting Editor of Plant and Soil
- Professional memberships: IUCN Peatlands Biodiversity Advisory Group, British Ecological Society
