Professor Andy Baird serves as Professor of Wetland Science in the School of Geography within the Faculty of Environment at the University of Leeds, where he has worked part-time (60% FTE) since January 2009 while concurrently operating as an environmental consultant. His academic leadership includes Programme Management for BSc Geography with Environmental Mathematics.
His educational foundation comprises a BSc in Physical Geography from the University of Hull and a PhD in soil- and ground-water hydrology from the University of Bristol, following prior academic appointments at the University of Sheffield (11 years, progressing from lecturer to reader) and Queen Mary University of London (4 years as Professor of Physical Geography).
Baird's research centers on peatland ecosystem dynamics, investigating water-carbon cycle interactions through numerical modeling approaches. His expertise spans Wetland Science, Peatlands, Ecohydrology, Carbon Cycle of Peatlands, and Computer Modelling of Peatland Hydrology and Development. His work emphasizes peatlands' critical role as global carbon reservoirs containing over one-third of soil carbon stocks, influencing climate regulation through carbon dioxide and methane fluxes.
He directs major research initiatives funded by NERC and Defra, including the Peatland Tipping Points project, iCASP's Yorkshire Integrated Catchment Solutions Programme (as work-stream leader), and CongoPeat. These projects advance the DigiBog model for simulating peatland formation, degradation, and climate change responses across diverse ecosystems from UK lowlands to Central African basins.
Baird has supervised 15 PhD students, 3 Masters by Research candidates, and 6 postdoctoral researchers, with current supervision focusing on wetland ecohydrology, peatland carbon balances (including methane dynamics), and computational modeling of peatland development. His River Basin Processes and Management research group collaborates internationally with institutions including Royal Holloway University of London, University of Manchester, and University of Exeter.
He maintains significant professional service as Editor of Mires and Peat, Associate Editor of Hydrological Processes, and Editorial Board member for Ecohydrology, while serving as external examiner for geography programmes at Lancaster University.
