Jenny Oliver is a Lecturer in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts University. She has taught Afro-Haitian Dance and Culture there since 2016. Her affiliations include the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapog, through which she advocates for Indigenous representation in performance. She has also been actively involved in supporting Haitian dance artists since 2013, traveling to Haiti to foster local artistic development.
Oliver holds a degree in dance with a focus on pedagogy and has trained in Modern, Jazz, Tap, Ballet, and completed the Horton Pedagogy Program at the Ailey School and the Cultural Traditions Program at the School of Jacob's Pillow. Her research interests emphasize Black dance in the diaspora, blending traditional Folkloric techniques with contemporary practices. She explores intersections of cultural heritage, identity, and movement.
Her recent work has been showcased at venues including HUBWeek Boston, Mark Morris Dance Center, We Create Festival, and Tufts University. In 2023, she received notable residencies: the first Choreographer in Residence at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the inaugural Boston Dance Maker's Residence at the Boston Center for the Arts. These accolades highlight her contributions to choreography and cultural arts.
