Jenny Chen is an NIH K99/R00 MOSAIC Scholar and former Harvard Data Science Fellow. She holds a PhD in Bioinformatics and Integrative Genomics from MIT, advised by Aviv Regev. Currently affiliated with Harvard University, her research focuses on understanding the genetic basis of innate behaviors using comparative genomics, single-cell transcriptomics, and computational methods. Her work combines experimental and computational approaches to study behavioral evolution in rodents and discover novel neuropeptides.
Education:
- PhD in Bioinformatics, MIT (Advisor: Aviv Regev)
- Postdoctoral Training: Hoekstra Lab & Eddy Lab, Harvard University
Research Interests: Dr. Chen investigates how genes encode behavioral traits, particularly reproductive behaviors in deer mice (Peromyscus species). Her lab explores two major areas: (1) genetic mechanisms of mating and parental care behaviors, and (2) computational discovery of conserved neuropeptides. She uses advanced techniques like single-nucleus RNA-sequencing, immunostaining, and machine learning to identify molecular pathways governing behavior.
Teaching: She has taught Molecular Biology and Genetics at MIT/Harvard Medical School and emphasizes active learning through real-world data analysis and ethical discussions on CRISPR technology. Her mentoring philosophy prioritizes fostering creativity, resilience, and scientific independence in students.
Labs & Collaborations: Collaborates with the Hoekstra Lab (behavioral genetics) and Eddy Lab (computational biology). Her independent lab will continue investigating neuronal cell-type evolution and neuropeptide functions.
