Hopi Hoekstra is the Edgerley Family Dean of Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology in the Departments of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology. Her research focuses on linking molecular, genetic, and neurobiological mechanisms to evolutionary changes in behavior and morphology.
- Key research areas: Behavior Evolution, Genetics, Neuroscience
- Labs: Hoekstra Lab
The lab's recent work explores the genetic basis of adaptive behaviors (e.g., burrowing, vocalization) and physiological traits in deer mice, using genomic and neurobiological approaches across 15+ publications from 2023-2025. Themes include chromosomal inversions, Hox gene expression, and olfactory evolution.
Her students include Olivia Harringmeyer (recipient of the Harold M. Weintraub Graduate Student Award), Nacho Sanguinetti Scheck (Assistant Professor at University of Pennsylvania), and Landen Gozashti (DeLill Nasser Award recipient). Contact: hopi_hoekstra@harvard.edu
