Hopi E. Hoekstra is the Edgerley Family Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, holding the C.Y. Chan Professorship of Arts and Sciences and the Xiaomeng Tong and Yu Chen Professorship of Life Sciences. She leads the Hoekstra Lab, part of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, focusing on understanding evolutionary mechanisms in natural populations. Her research integrates molecular genetics, developmental biology, and field studies to explore how genetic and environmental factors shape morphological, behavioral, and reproductive diversity in mammals like deer mice.
Her work emphasizes the interplay between proximate (molecular/genetic) and ultimate (ecological/selection) causes of evolution. Techniques include next-gen sequencing, behavioral assays, and field experiments. Key areas of study include pigmentation patterns, burrowing behavior, and sperm competition. Tracy Barbaro serves as her faculty support.
Research highlights include identifying genetic mutations driving adaptive coloration in beach mice and elucidating developmental mechanisms behind stripe patterns in rodents. The lab’s interdisciplinary approach bridges evolutionary and developmental biology, contributing to broader understanding of biodiversity.
Recent lab milestones include student Olivia Harringmeyer winning the Harold M. Weintraub Award and postdocs transitioning to academic roles at institutions like the University of Pennsylvania.
