Jennifer Tjia, MD, MSCE, FAAHPM, is a Professor with Tenure in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School, with joint appointments in Palliative Care and Epidemiology. She is board-certified in Hospice/Palliative Medicine and Geriatrics. Her research targets healthcare inequities through two pillars: (1) combating structural racism/implicit bias in care delivery, and (2) optimizing medication use via deprescribing and goal-concordant prescribing in palliative contexts.
Education:
- MD, Boston University School of Medicine (1994)
- MSCE, University of Pennsylvania (2003)
- BA, Political Science, Boston University
Research Focus: Dr. Tjia leads NIH-funded projects including R01 studies on structural racism in serious illness care (R01 NR020439) and implicit bias mitigation (R01 MD011532), as well as an R21 deprescribing intervention in hospice. Her work integrates implementation science to bridge evidence-based practices with clinical care for marginalized populations.
Publication Trends: Her recent articles (2021-2025) cluster around dementia care, hospice medication safety, bias reduction in clinical training, and health equity. Methodologies include mixed-methods designs, clinical trials, and policy analyses, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches to geriatrics and palliative care innovation.
Awards & Honors:
- Fellow, American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (2019)
