Dr. Jennifer Rowntree is an Associate Professor in Ecological Genetics at the University of Plymouth's School of Biological and Marine Sciences (Faculty of Science and Engineering). She leads research on the genetics of species interactions and molecular tools for ecological questions, with a focus on mangrove conservation, ex situ plant preservation, and biodiversity quantification in agroecosystems. As Deputy Director of the Centre of Research Excellence in Intelligent and Sustainable Productive Systems (CRISPS), she champions interdisciplinary solutions to environmental challenges.
Her teaching includes modules such as Introduction to Biological Sciences and Ecology Field Course, emphasizing practical and field-based learning. She has advised over 18 students on topics spanning mangrove genetics, carnivorous plant conservation, and microbiome dynamics, securing funding from NERC, BBSRC, and the Newton Fund.
Research highlights include mangrove restoration genetics, cryopreservation of bryophytes, and urban environmental impacts on plant adaptation. She contributes to global initiatives like the NERC UK Treescapes project and the ELMS-Exchange hub, promoting sustainable land management strategies.
