Dr Mick Hanley is an Associate Professor in Plant-Animal Interactions at the University of Plymouth's School of Biological and Marine Sciences (Faculty of Science and Engineering). His research focuses on plant-animal interactions, coastal ecosystems, and ecological engineering. He leads modules such as 'Field Biology' and organizes fieldcourses to Spain. Key projects include the Plymouth Living Seawall initiative, leveraging biomimetic panels to enhance intertidal biodiversity, and Leverhulme Trust-funded studies on seedling defense and fungal psilocybin ecology. Collaborations span global institutions, with publications emphasizing coastal greening, climate impacts, and biodiversity conservation. Supervised over 20 PhD students, many now leading in academia and conservation. Email contacts: michael.hanley@plymouth.ac.uk and mehanley@plymouth.ac.uk.
- Education: PhD in Ecology (Implied by career trajectory)
- Affiliations: Hanley Lab, NERC BIO-PLASTIC-RISK Project, THESEUS consortium
Research Interests: Coastal eco-engineering, plant-herbivore dynamics, macroalgal functional diversity, bioplastic environmental risks, and pollinator ecology. Recent work highlights the role of aspect-driven microclimates and topographic complexity in shaping marine communities.
Publications span 30+ years, addressing topics from seedling tolerance to global biodiversity trends. Active in policy advocacy, emphasizing sustainable coastal development and urban ecology.
