Jennifer Maher is a Lecturer in the Department for Health at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism (CNEM) and the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human. Her research focuses on exercise and metabolic health in individuals with spinal cord injury.
Her research interests include high-intensity interval training (HIIT), glucose control, cardiometabolic risk reduction, and rehabilitation strategies for spinal cord injury. She investigates the metabolic and physiological impacts of exercise and neuromuscular stimulation in both disabled and nondisabled populations.
Her recent publications (2022–2024) emphasize randomized trials and methodological rigor in human physiology, particularly in exercise interventions for spinal cord injury patients. Themes include lifestyle modifications, standardization of research protocols, and metabolic outcomes.
Jennifer Maher has received research funding from The Academy of Medical Sciences and the National Institute for Health Research. She serves on the editorial board of Spinal Cord and is active in professional societies such as the International Spinal Cord Society.
She contributes to academic discourse through conference presentations and visiting lectureships, including an upcoming role at the University of Birmingham. Her work supports UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
She leads a project on neuromuscular electrical stimulation for glucose control and collaborates on mitochondrial respirometry research. Her lab is involved in clinical exercise interventions and metabolic monitoring.
