Jennifer Hartmann

Jennifer Hartmann is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at CUNY York College, with appointments since 2023. She holds a PhD in Social Work from Columbia University (2023), an MSW from Case Western Reserve University (2012), and a BA in French from Xavier University (2008). Her research focuses on intersections of intimate partner violence (IPV) with child and family welfare systems globally, particularly in refugee populations. She teaches courses on generalist social work practice, trauma impacts, and international social work.

Her work emphasizes global social work practices, having collaborated with stakeholders in eight countries. Key areas include Syrian refugee women’s experiences in Jordan, justice-involved populations, and NGO resilience during civil unrest. Dr. Hartmann has received grants including a 2024 PSC-CUNY award for research on asylum-seeker health disparities. She is a licensed Master Social Worker in New York and maintains active membership in organizations like NASW and SSWR.

Dr. Hartmann’s publications span Refuge, AIDS Education & Prevention, and Global Public Health, addressing topics like refugee mental health, IPV typologies, and NGO crisis management. Her teaching includes innovative methods such as photovoice projects and trauma-focused seminars. Professional service includes roles as an abstract reviewer for SSWR and contributor to UNICEF workforce reports in Uzbekistan and Central Asia.
