Christopher Kyriakides is a Research Professor and Canada Research Chair in Citizenship, Social Justice and Ethno-Racialization at York University’s Department of Sociology, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. He joined York in 2016, with his CRC position renewed in 2021. Prior to this, he studied at the University of Glasgow, earning his BA and PhD. His research focuses on refugee studies, ethno-racialization, nationalism, and social justice, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of race, migration, and citizenship. He has led numerous research projects funded by SSHRC and other agencies, including studies on Syrian and Ethiopian refugees in Canada and the impact of refugee reception discourses.

Research Interests: His work explores the racialized reception contexts of refugees, creative resistance strategies, and the tension between ethnic and refugee studies. He co-edited the special issue Racialized Refuge in Refuge and authored Race Defaced: Paradigms of Pessimism, Politics of Possibility. Kyriakides emphasizes the importance of creative imagination in breaking down oppressive structures and fostering social change.

Labs & Teams: He leads the ‘racisms and refuge’ sub-committee at York’s Centre for Refugee Studies and collaborates with organizations like the Council of Europe and UNHCR. His research team includes over 20 graduate and community-based researchers, focusing on refugee integration, racial justice, and empowerment initiatives.
