Jennifer Ann Bates is a Full Professor of Philosophy at Duquesne University, affiliated with the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts. She has held roles such as editor of Idealistic Studies and Heidelberg University Alumni Research Ambassador since 2013. She established and chaired the Philosophy Duquesne–Heidelberg Exchange from 2013 to 2016.

Bates specializes in 19th-century German philosophy, particularly Hegel’s theory of imagination and its intersections with literature and environmental ethics. She explores how philosophical concepts shape interpretations of Shakespearean works, emphasizing moral and political imagination. Her recent work underscores the necessity of integrating liberal arts perspectives with ecological sustainability, arguing for their mutual dependence in addressing contemporary challenges.

Her recent articles and chapters reflect a focus on Hegel’s influence on Shakespearean analysis and environmental philosophy. Her upcoming monograph, Over-Measure in Kant, Hegel and Shakespeare (2025), bridges philosophical systems and literary form.
