Jenni Spännäri is a Docent and Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Theology, specializing in Practical Theology. She holds an affiliation with the Practical Theology department and has been actively involved in interdisciplinary research since 2004.
Her research focuses on religious spaces, family dynamics, animal-human relationships, and cultural identity. Notable projects include the CoCo initiative exploring safety in religious spaces, Europe Engage fostering intercultural dialogue, and CoPassion investigating compassion's societal impact. She has also studied the religious identities of elderly immigrants and aging populations' spiritual needs.
Dr. Spännäri has co-authored 31 peer-reviewed publications, including works on methodology for safety studies in sacred spaces (2025), family religion continuity (2025), and intersubjectivity in human-horse interactions (2024). She actively participates in academic activities, organizing conferences like Väreily (2024) and Emotions, Embodiments, Spirituality (2023). She received the 2018 Erasmus+ Success Story Award for Europe Engage's impactful educational programs.
Her work bridges theology with psychology, anthropology, and education, emphasizing empirical methods while addressing contemporary societal challenges such as multicultural integration and animal ethics.
