Her research spans theology, sociology, and organizational studies with a focus on compassion, altruism, and experiences of the sacred. She leads multiple major research projects including a Research Council of Finland-funded initiative on safety in religious spaces (2023-2027) and a Blood Service Research Fund project on donation motivations (2025-2027).
Professor Pessi's research interests center on compassion studies, theology of altruism, religious experiences, and psychological safety. Her work bridges theological inquiry with sociological analysis, particularly examining how individuals experience safety, the sacred, and meaningful connection in contemporary society. Recent publications reveal a growing focus on organizational compassion, the methodology of studying religious spaces, and the intersection of emotions with religious experience.
Her most recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a clear trajectory toward practical applications of compassion research in organizational settings while maintaining theological depth in examining sacred experiences. The articles show increasing interdisciplinary collaboration, methodological innovation in studying religious spaces, and attention to real-world applications of compassion research in workplaces and communities during crises.
