Dr. Jenna Ziebell is an Associate Professor at the University of Tasmania's Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. She holds a PhD from Monash University and has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Adelaide, University of Kentucky, and University of Arizona/Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Her research focuses on microglial biology in neurological diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury (TBI), with an emphasis on inflammatory mechanisms and their impact on aging and cognitive function. She leads the Microglia and Neurodegeneration Research Team and has pioneered studies on microglial-synapse interactions and microglial priming in neurodegenerative processes.
Dr. Ziebell’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science (Monash University) and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (University of Tasmania). She coordinates units in the Bachelor of Dementia Care and Master of Dementia programs, emphasizing neuroscience and immunology education. Her funded projects explore microglial roles in Alzheimer’s, TBI, and obesity-related neurodegeneration, supported by grants from the NHMRC, National Foundation for Medical Research and Innovation, and others.
Key research themes include microglial dynamics in synaptic remodelling, neurovascular interactions in Alzheimer’s, and biological sex differences in neuroinflammatory responses. Her team’s work has advanced understanding of microglia-pericyte interactions and the social impact of TBI in vulnerable populations. Dr. Ziebell frequently presents at international neuroscience conferences and collaborates on public health initiatives like the TALK-TBI program to improve TBI awareness in Aboriginal communities.
