Dr Jemma Hawkins is a Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University's School of Social Sciences, within the DECIPHer Centre. She leads the Centre’s methods research programme for public health intervention science and directs short courses on evaluating complex interventions. Her career spans academic and applied research, including a BSc in Psychology from Cardiff University, NHS mental health practice, and a PhD in Health Psychology. She has held post-doctoral roles in social care research and DECIPHer since 2013, advancing expertise in mixed-methods evaluations of public health interventions.
Her research focuses on developing and evaluating complex population health interventions, particularly in schools and communities, emphasizing physical activity, mental health promotion, and co-production approaches. Key interests include green exercise (e.g., gardening’s benefits for older adults) and social determinants of health. She employs quantitative and qualitative methods to assess intervention efficacy and health outcomes.
Dr Hawkins has contributed to impactful studies on school transitions, adolescent substance use, and dementia care system readiness in Peru. Her work bridges academic research and practical implementation, with a focus on equitable health interventions and interdisciplinary collaboration.
