Jeffrey Johnson is the A. Ronald Gallant Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC). He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Kansas (1994) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University (1999). After postdoctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the UNC faculty in 2001, advancing to Professor in 2010 and serving as Department Chair. His research focuses on synthetic organic chemistry, asymmetric catalysis, and the discovery of novel organic transformations, particularly in natural product synthesis.
Johnson has received numerous accolades, including the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award (2010), Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar (2006), and Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (2006–2008). His lab’s recent work includes converting petroleum refinery waste into compounds for anesthetics and antidepressants, highlighting his commitment to applied and sustainable chemistry. His research emphasizes tandem reactions, stereochemical control, and accessible starting materials, training students in advanced organic and organometallic techniques.
Professional milestones include leadership roles, grants (NSF CAREER Award, 2003–2008), and international recognitions such as the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry Japan Lectureship (2014).
