Dr. Jeffrey H. Michaels is a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London’s Department of War Studies and the Centre for Science & Security Studies. He concurrently holds positions as IEN Senior Fellow in American Foreign Policy at the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), Visiting Fellow at Oxford’s Changing Character of War Centre, and Associate Senior Research Fellow at RAND Europe. Previously, he served as a Senior Lecturer in Defence Studies and Research Associate in War Studies at King’s College, alongside roles in NATO and the US Department of Defense.
His research focuses on nuclear strategy, deterrence theory, US foreign policy, NATO dynamics, intelligence studies, and Cold War history. Notable works include co-editing Beyond Ukraine: Debating the Future of War (2024) and co-authoring The Evolution of Nuclear Strategy (4th ed., 2019). He is also working on a forthcoming book, One President at a Time?, examining presidential transition diplomacy.
Michaels frequently engages with strategic studies through academic collaborations and public events, such as the 2024 symposium on the future of war. His recent publications analyze self-deterrence theory, NATO treaty interpretations, and the influence of philanthropic funding on strategic research.
His advisory roles include contributions to NATO’s Defense College and RAND Europe, reflecting his expertise in bridging academic analysis with policy implementation. Affiliated with King’s School of Security Studies, his work integrates historical context with contemporary security challenges.
