Gian Gentile serves as Associate Director of RAND Arroyo Center (the Army's sole federally funded research center), Senior Historian at RAND, and Professor of Policy Analysis at the RAND School of Public Policy. His expertise spans U.S. Army total force policy, military doctrine/organization, history, strategy, and innovation. He retired after 32 years of active U.S. Army service, including combat roles in Iraq (2003 and 2006) and leadership at West Point's Military History Program prior to joining RAND.
Education: Ph.D. in History (Stanford University), M.M.A.S. (School of Advanced Military Studies), B.A. in History (UC Berkeley). Notable positions include visiting fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Research emphasizes modern military history, strategic studies, and contemporary security challenges such as Russia-Ukraine dynamics and Indo-Pacific security.
Recent work addresses Ukraine's strategic options, NATO's future, and historical analogies to modern conflicts.
