Jeffrey Grossman is the Morton and Claire Goulder and Family Professor in Environmental Systems and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. He leads the Grossman Group, focusing on nanomaterials, energy applications, and sustainable technologies. His research includes solar energy storage, graphene-based desalination, and novel materials for industrial separations. He co-founded ViaSeparations and SiTration to commercialize membrane technologies.
- Education: BA in Physics (Johns Hopkins University, 1991), PhD in Theoretical Physics (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, 1996)
- Postdoctoral Work: University of California, Berkeley; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Lawrence Fellow)
Research interests span energy conversion, storage, and clean-water technologies. His team develops low-energy cooling systems and materials for manufacturing efficiency. Key innovations include chemical-free silicon membranes and graphene-oxide-based separations.
Awards: 2022 Committed to Caring (MIT), 2016 MacVicar Faculty Fellow, 2014 Bose Teaching Award.
Advising & Grants: Grossman has advised numerous students and secured patents (17 total) in materials science. His lab actively collaborates on industrial-scale applications of nanomaterials.
Labs/Teams: The Grossman Group at MIT focuses on computational and experimental materials design, with a lab in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
