Jeffrey D. Thomas is an Associate Professor of Physics and Earth Science at Central Connecticut State University, where he teaches secondary science methods, earth science and physical science for elementary majors, meteorology, and graduate courses for in-service science teachers. With a background that includes twelve years as a secondary earth science teacher and four years as a broadcast meteorologist, Dr. Thomas brings practical experience to his academic work.
His research focuses on geoscience education, inquiry-based learning, and curriculum development, with particular emphasis on how students understand and engage with earth science concepts. Dr. Thomas has developed numerous educational resources through the InTeGrate project, including course modules and activities that help students explore the methods of geoscience through spatial, temporal, and systems thinking approaches.
Dr. Thomas's publications and course materials demonstrate a consistent focus on improving science education through inquiry-based methods. His work often addresses common misconceptions in earth science, such as the reasons for seasonal changes, and provides structured approaches for students to develop evidence-based conclusions. He has contributed significantly to professional development for science educators through workshops and webinars on teaching the methods of geoscience.
As an active member of the geoscience education community, Dr. Thomas participates in organizations including InTeGrate Materials Developers, RTOP Observers, Teach the Earth, and the Earth Educators' Rendezvous. His work bridges the gap between earth science content knowledge and effective pedagogical approaches for diverse student populations.
