Dr. Jeffrey Ackerman is a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University's School of Criminology and Criminal Justice on the Gold Coast Campus. He is a member of the Griffith Criminology Institute and holds various advisory roles including CCJ Learning Management System Advisor and Program Director for the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
Dr. Ackerman's research focuses on intimate partner violence, juvenile delinquency, victimization, and technology facilitated abuse. His work examines domestic violence dynamics, particularly in technology-mediated contexts, and he has led significant research on children as victims of technology facilitated abuse for Australia's eSafety Commissioner.
His research portfolio demonstrates strong interdisciplinary connections across criminology, sociology, and social psychology, with particular emphasis on gender-based violence and youth justice systems. Recent work explores technology-facilitated coercive control in young people's relationships and cross-cultural comparisons of bystander intervention in domestic violence situations.
Dr. Ackerman has secured funding from prestigious organizations including the US National Institute of Justice, the Office of Australia's eSafety Commissioner, and multiple Griffith University research grants. His current projects include studies on smartphone sharing with intimate partners and multi-sector collaboration to improve domestic violence victim safety.
As an educator, he supervises numerous doctoral and masters students and teaches courses in CCJ Honours statistics and criminal victimization. His teaching portfolio spans Criminology, Criminal Law, Research Methods, Statistics, Violent Crime, Juvenile Delinquency, and Victimology.
Dr. Ackerman previously served as a police officer in Pennsylvania and has been living in Australia since 2013, where he has become an Australian citizen. He holds degrees from Pennsylvania State University including a PhD (2003), M.A. (1998), and B.S. (1993).
