Jefferson Gatrall is an Associate Professor at Montclair State University in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He serves as Director of the Medical Humanities program and Coordinator of the Russian Program.

His research examines 19th-century novels from Russia, Western Europe, and the United States, focusing on intersections between modern fiction and cultural domains like medicine, visual art, and religion. He has authored two books: The Real and The Sacred: Picturing Jesus in Nineteenth-Century Fiction (2014) and Alter Icons: The Russian Icon and Modernity (2010). Publications include works on Chekhov, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Proust, and Lew Wallace.
In 2022, Gatrall issued a strong statement condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, asserting alignment with international law and solidarity with Ukrainian people. His office hours include Tuesdays (1:00–3:00 PM) and Fridays (11:00 AM–12:00 PM).
