Wickes’s research explores the interplay between Syriac literature, theology, and liturgy. His work analyzes Ephrem the Syrian’s hymns, particularly their role in late antique theological debates and performative contexts. He has published extensively on Syriac hagiography, divine names theology, and the relationship between hymnody and scripture. His current project examines Syriac hagiographical poems and their engagement with gender, time, and agency.
His articles and books reflect a focus on Ephrem’s contributions to Syriac Christianity, the liturgical and educational contexts of his works, and the broader implications for late antique religious thought. His grants include support from the NEH, Mellon Foundation, and Dumbarton Oaks.
Wickes teaches courses on early Christianity, liturgical theology, and the role of music/poetry in religious identity. He collaborates on projects like Genesis in Late Antique Poetry and co-edits volumes on Syriac exegesis.
