Dr. Jeff Jones is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Florida, where he leads the Jones Lab specializing in phytobacteriology. His research focuses on bacterial plant pathogens, particularly Xanthomonas species causing bacterial spot disease in tomato and pepper.
Dr. Jones' research interests span multiple areas of plant pathology with emphasis on:
- Bacterial plant pathogen ecology and host-parasite interactions
- Xanthomonas population dynamics and evolution
- Plant resistance mechanisms against bacterial pathogens
- Development of novel management strategies including nanoparticle applications
- Effector characterization and their role in pathogenicity
The trends in Dr. Jones' recent publications (2018-2022) reveal a strong focus on Xanthomonas pathogens, particularly X. perforans causing bacterial spot of tomato. His research spans multiple dimensions including pathogen population genetics, effector biology, host resistance mechanisms, and novel management approaches using nanotechnology. A significant portion of his work involves collaborative research across disciplines to address the challenges of bacterial spot disease in commercial tomato production.
Dr. Jones has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who have gone on to successful careers in plant pathology and related fields. His lab includes current graduate students working on various aspects of bacterial spot disease and citrus canker research.
The Jones Lab at the University of Florida is a leading research group in phytobacteriology, specializing on bacterial spot disease of tomato and pepper caused by Xanthomonas species. The lab collaborates with researchers across multiple disciplines at and outside University of Florida in fields like resistance breeding and chemical control strategies. In addition to bacterial spot research, the lab also studies host-pathogen interactions of citrus canker disease.
