Dr. Youfu Zhao is a Professor and Endowed Chair in Bacterial Diseases of Tree Fruits at Washington State University's Department of Plant Pathology within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. His research focuses on phytobacteriology and plant-microbe interactions, particularly bacterial diseases of tree fruits like fire blight, bacterial canker, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms.
Research interests include pathogen biology of tree fruit bacterial diseases, genetics/genomics of plant pathogens, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and biological control strategies. His work combines molecular approaches with field applications to develop sustainable disease management solutions.
Recent publications highlight advancements in understanding pathogen genomics, virulence regulation (e.g., RpoN regulon analysis), and antifungal resistance mechanisms in Fusarium species. His work bridges fundamental science with practical applications, such as microcapsule-mediated biocontrol of fire blight using Pantoea agglomerans.
Professional experience includes leadership roles at WSU (2022–present) and the University of Illinois (2006–2021). Current lab openings exist for postdocs, technicians, and graduate students focusing on plant pathogenic bacteria and tree fruit systems.
