Amanda Strayer-Scherer is an Assistant Professor & Extension Specialist in Entomology & Plant Pathology at Auburn University's College of Agriculture. Her research focuses on plant pathology in major crops such as peanut, cotton, small grains, turfgrass, and ornamental plants. She specializes in disease management strategies, fungicide resistance, nanomaterial-based solutions, and integrated pest management. Her extension role emphasizes translating research into practical solutions for farmers and agricultural stakeholders.
Key research interests include molecular epidemiology of plant viruses (e.g., cotton leafroll dwarf virus), optimizing fungicide programs for sustainable agriculture, and developing alternatives to conventional bactericides using nanomaterials. She has conducted extensive studies on bacterial spot diseases of tomato and peppers caused by Xanthomonas species, evaluating novel bactericides like magnesium oxide nanomaterials and systemic acquired resistance inducers.
Recent work highlights include analyzing fungicide resistance in Alternaria spp., assessing copper bactericide impacts on soil microbiomes, and evaluating grafted tomato hybrids for late blight resistance. Her collaborative efforts with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System aim to strengthen specialty crop industries through education and adaptive farming practices.
