Neha Potnis is an Associate Professor of Bacteriology in the Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology at Auburn University's College of Agriculture. Her research focuses on understanding microbial pathogenesis, plant-microbe interactions, and the evolution of bacterial pathogens in agricultural systems. She leads a lab investigating genomic and ecological drivers of pathogen emergence, with particular emphasis on Xanthomonas species and their impact on crops like tomato and pepper.
Her work integrates genomic sequencing, computational biology, and experimental pathology to address challenges in crop disease management. Key areas include copper resistance evolution in plant pathogens, phyllosphere microbiome dynamics, and the role of environmental stressors like ozone in shaping host-pathogen relationships. Dr. Potnis also advocates for open science practices in plant pathology research.
Recent projects explore AI-driven prediction systems for bacterial virulence factors and the global epidemiology of plant pathogens such as Xylella fastidiosa. Her lab's findings contribute to developing resilient crop varieties and sustainable agricultural practices against evolving threats.
Dr. Potnis is affiliated with Auburn University’s Rouse Life Science Building and collaborates with the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station. She actively publishes in high-impact journals and participates in initiatives to improve disease surveillance and management strategies for bacterial spot diseases.
