He joined Harvard in 2016 after teaching at Illinois State University and completed his PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Behrends' work bridges theoretical ethics (e.g., reasons for action, moral epistemology) and applied issues (e.g., machine learning ethics, algorithmic decision-making). His presentations span topics from autonomous vehicles to gender justice in education.
Current roles include leadership in Harvard's Faculty Committee and collaboration across departments to embed ethics education. His research also explores intersections between normative theory and technological innovation, emphasizing practical implications of abstract ethical frameworks.
