Dr. Jeanne Sumrall is an Instructor of Geosciences and member of the Kansas Academy of Science at Fort Hays State University (FHSU). She is affiliated with the Department of Geosciences and holds an office in Tomanek Hall. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (Mississippi State University, 2015), MAT in Secondary Science (University of North Carolina Wilmington, 2010), M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy (University of South Florida, 2006), and B.S. in Biology and Business Management (Coastal Carolina University, 2002).
Her research focuses on geoscience education, online learning effectiveness, karst systems, and environmental geology. Notable projects include studies on student performance in online geology courses, karst-based learning in island environments, and microbial diversity in natural hydrocarbon seeps. She has also explored the impacts of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill on student awareness through a geographic affiliation lens.
Sumrall actively contributes to professional communities through journal reviewing for the Journal of Geoscience Education and Geosphere. Her work bridges field-based geology (e.g., cave development studies in Aruba) with pedagogical innovations, such as student-designed mapping projects and sense-of-place writing templates.
