Dr. Jonathan Sumrall is an Associate Professor of Geosciences at Fort Hays State University (FHSU), affiliated with the Department of Geosciences within the Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics. He holds a Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from Mississippi State University (2013) and has taught courses including Mineralogy, Petrology, and Hydrology. His research focuses on carbonate petrology, karst systems, and advanced analytical techniques like SEM/TEM imaging and isotope geochemistry.
Dr. Sumrall’s work integrates field-based studies with laboratory analyses, emphasizing karst processes in regions like the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. Notable contributions include studies on dolomitization mechanisms, microbial influences on carbonate formation, and predictive karst modeling in Kansas. He has received awards including the FHSU Outstanding Scholarship Faculty Award (2021) and IAEA Distinguished Lecturer recognition (2013).
His field research spans projects in Michigan’s Hiawatha National Forest, Curaçao’s volcaniclastic carbonates, and Barbados’ chalk formations. Current research explores wildfire geography, paleoclimatology, and resource management applications of geospatial technologies. Dr. Sumrall advises graduate students in carbonate petrology and petroleum geology.
