Dr. Jeanne Garane is a Professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds the rank of Professor and serves as Director of the Francophone Studies Program and Graduate Advisor for the French Program. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (1994) and extensive postdoctoral fellowships.
Education: Ph.D. in French (University of Michigan, 1994), M.A. in French (University of Michigan, 1987), Licence-ès-Lettres (University of Grenoble, 1985), and B.A. in French and English (Northern Michigan University, 1983).
Research Interests: Postcolonial literature, translation studies, gender studies, and comparative cultural studies. Her work focuses on Francophone African and Caribbean texts, emphasizing oral traditions, postcolonial identity, and transnational cultural dynamics.
Grants & Awards: Recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship (2025), Camargo Foundation Fellowship (2019), and multiple NEH grants. She has also received recognition for her contributions to women’s studies and African literature.
Key Publications: Literary translations of Amadou Hampâté Bâ’s Amkoullel, The Fula Boy (Duke University Press, 2021) and Daniel Picouly’s The Leopard Boy (University of Virginia Press, 2016). She has edited volumes such as Hybrid Genres (2018) and Odysseys: Travel Narratives in French (2017).
Service: Chair of tenure/promotion committees, director of French literature conferences, and active member of professional organizations like the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) and the Conseil International d’Études Francophones (CIEF).
