Jeanette Whitaker is a Professor and Associate Science Director at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), leading the Land-Atmosphere Interactions Science Area with 120 staff across four sites. With 27 years at UKCEH (formerly Institute of Terrestrial Ecology), she manages £10M in research projects for BBSRC and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, focusing on soil ecology and climate change impacts.
Her academic foundation includes:
- BSc in Applied Biology from Liverpool John Moores University (1994)
- PhD in Plant and Soil Science from University of Leeds (1997)
Whitaker's research pioneers understanding of soil carbon dynamics, particularly microbial necromass's role in carbon stabilization and greenhouse gas removal via biochar. Her work on perennial bioenergy crops reduces carbon balance uncertainties for UK sustainable biomass expansion, addressing critical climate change mitigation pathways through integrated soil-plant-atmosphere studies.
Analysis of her 2016-2023 publications reveals dominant themes in soil carbon sequestration mechanisms, diurnal greenhouse gas patterns, and bioenergy crop sustainability. Key contributions include microbial necromass continuum modeling, nitrous oxide emission variability, and Miscanthus carbon neutrality assessments, bridging fundamental soil science with climate policy applications.
Key recognition includes:
- NERC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
She directs major initiatives including the £5M Biomass Connect Innovation Platform and serves as Executive Editor of SOIL (European Geosciences Union). Her leadership spans 5 research groups developing climate adaptation metrics and soil carbon monitoring frameworks, with projects informing UK net-zero strategies and European bioenergy policies.
The Land-Atmosphere Interactions Science Area under her direction integrates experimental, modeling, and policy teams across UKCEH sites, operating field stations for long-term soil monitoring and greenhouse gas flux measurements to advance terrestrial climate solutions.
